offf 2025 projection
INTRO
Myself and fellow motion designer Daire O’ Suilleabhain were selected to be part of OFFF 2025’s The Screen projection, a series of videos displayed on the side of Barcelona’s Disseny Hub. Our challenge was to create an animation that would translate perfectly onto the building’s façade while capturing the festival’s vibrant energy.
We collaborated to design a high-end, immersive projection that balanced dynamic movement with visual excitement, and we were thrilled to be chosen among so many incredible submissions.
From the start, we envisioned a burst of color to bring life to the plain wall of the Disseny Hub. Our concept centered around a playful scientist character who, with the press of a button, would unleash a wave of creativity across the scene. The animation became a celebration of imagination and energy transforming the blank surface into an explosion of color, fun, and motion.
BEHIND THE SCENES
As part of the project, I created a fun behind the scenes video over on my Instagram page.
I’ve linked it below so you can see just how this all came together!
3D Scenes
Using Cinema 4D and Redshift, I combined a mix of GreyscaleGorilla assets with models I created myself. The focus was on keeping the animation playful and fun, while ensuring everything was optimized to handle collisions and dynamics smoothly.
The final result is a vibrant explosion of colors and shapes.. a proper visual treat! One of my favorite details was the pin featuring my own logo alongside Daire’s FEESH logo on a bright orange video, both added a playful, personal touch to the projection.
DYNAMICS
Ooft—this one was a challenge. Managing so many objects in a scene is tricky enough, but layering dynamics, gravity, and movement on top? That meant plenty of Cinema 4D crashes.
Thanks to countless cups of coffee and diligent backups, the project finally came together with smooth collisions and playful bouncing that didn’t break the scene (mostly!).
Since the festival wanted the animation to sync with a 125 BPM beat, we needed movement that was both controlled and dynamic.
To achieve this, I scaled the objects every 12 frames (either up or down) creating a constant pulse that matched the rhythm. The result was exactly what we wanted: chaotic, playful, and full of energy.
fINAL tHOUGHTS!
Daire and I were thrilled with the results. Our work was featured as the lead image in OFFF’s celebratory email, our behind-the-scenes reel surpassed 3,000 views, and seeing our animation projected on the Disseny Hub was a truly unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime moment.
Collaborating with Daire was an absolute joy, and the experience reinforced my passion for working with other designers on playful, creative projects - pushing boundaries and seeing what we can invent together!
